We were fortunate enough, during our home search, to find a home with a large laundry room. As some of you know, that’s not always the case. When we moved into our home, I decided the laundry room was high on the priority list due to its appearance. It was dark, unfinished, and uninviting. Not at all a space you’d want to spend time folding laundry. This space has come a long way, but it still isn’t finished after four or five years. It’s probably like 85% complete, and I find that completely frustrating. So, what’s the hold up? Tile.
Yes, the hold up is the installation of subway tile. Plus some trim work, but that’s not the real issue. For about two years now, we’ve been contemplating whether to install the backsplash ourselves or hire someone. I’m sure some of you have dealt with a similar issue when renovating your home, so I thought I’d share our dilemma. I’ve created a brief pros and cons list for both.
- Less Expensive
- Attention to Detail & Care for Cabinets/Fixtures
- Less Mess
- Never Installed a Backsplash
- Time Constraints
Hire a Professional
- Less Time to Complete
- Less Work for Us
- More Costly
- Contractors = Irritation
- Could Damage Something
Deciding whether or not to hire a professional is one of the most challenging decisions for us. Our experience with contractors has been frustrating, and I’ve found the quality of work isn’t always satisfactory. If Ryan and I can do it, it usually just makes sense for us to tackle the project even if it takes longer to complete it. We’ve installed 90% of the tile in our home, and we don’t have a problem doing it. We haven’t tackled a backsplash though, and we’ve been putting this project off for essentially two years. That’s usually an indicator we don’t really want to do it. I want the backsplash to look great, and I don’t want anything to be damaged in the process. Our laundry room is beautiful, and this backsplash will be the cherry on top.
I want to hear from you though. Have you installed a backsplash before? Is it easier to hire someone even though I’ll have to micromanage the entire project? Either way, we are going to complete this space by the end of the year. No more procrastinating, it’s time to check this off my list!
