Our current deck is pitiful. It’s the original wood deck, and it was not well-maintained. It has been cleaned several times, but we’ve always just wanted to replace it. I mean if you walk on it without shoes, you’re going to regret it. It’s roughly 10×12 in size and sits between 6-8 feet above the ground (our yard slopes). One of the biggest drawbacks is the lack of stairs from the deck to the yard. There’s no way down. You can either go inside and downstairs to the back door or exit the front and walk around to the back. Not ideal to say the least. Simply put, our current deck situation sucks!
So what would I like to have? You’re so sweet to ask! I looked online for inspiration and found some amazing decks. I thought I’d share a few.
To answer the question…I want a large deck for relaxing and enjoying meals with family. I also want little maintenance, which is why Trex composite decking is the best material for this project. It’s just more expensive. We actually used Trex on our front porch. I’m not going to go into all of the benefits today…that’s for a later post. Obviously, there’s a lot that goes into building a deck…much more than we really want to deal with. If the deck wasn’t so high up, we probably would have tackled this project ourselves. Without stairs, there’s just no good way for us to do it. We decided to contact Lowe’s to schedule a free consultation.
The consultation was easy to schedule online. We received a call a couple of days prior to confirm, and the gentleman we met with was very knowledgeable. We met for an hour or so to discuss our plans. We also selected materials. Now let me back up for a moment. Prior to his visit, I utilized Lowe’s deck planner tool to design our deck. I found the tool slightly irritating, but it accomplished the end goal. Since I designed this deck prior to our meeting, it saved us all some time in the consultation.
You’ll have to pretend it’s attached to the house. I couldn’t get the wall feature to work in their program.
The deck is roughly 360 square feet and features two levels. The stairs will actually be level with the second tier, but again, issues with their tool. It’s pretty exciting to think about. It will feature Trex materials, so durability is guaranteed. So are we doing this?
Well after suffering from sticker shock (we were off by $7000) and much discussion, we think this is the way to go. We’re getting a new deck! I’m really excited, and it’s tentatively scheduled for next month. How awesome is that? Well I can’t wait to share updates and the entire experience with you in April. Stay tuned.
